The Peacock OB (Aulonocara sp.) also known as Orange Blossom Cichlid, is a colorful hybrid which is a hardy variety belonging to the haplochromine cichlids originating from Lake Malawi. This attractive cichlid comes from harder water conditions and is not suitable for a tropical fish community, it should only be housed with species of the same origin and temperament.

Preparing the water with Malawi cichlid minerals (Cichlid Lake Salt) and alkaline buffers (Malawi Victoria Buffer) helps provide ideal conditions for preserving their health and color. As with most cichlids, bullying is commonly experienced and keeping a larger group helps reduce aggression. It is not abnormal for dominant alpha males to become more colorful while others fade to avoid attention, adjusting hiding spaces or changing the number of fish can affect behavior.

Peacock cichlids readily accepts most foods, but care must be taken to select an appropriate diet designed specifically for cichlids which is rich in Spirulina, avoid over feeding or adding food intended for other species. It must also be noted that hybrid species are not a natural color found in the wild, they require a color enhancing diet to remain vibrant.
